What is Katonah Yoga, from the Mothership:
KATONAH YOGA ® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan of Katonah Yoga Center over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices. Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight. Disciplined techniques are organized for revelation through revolutions.
What is Katonah Yoga, from Analog:
You need tremendous faith to learn and to have a practice. You have to listen, experience, then question. You must first embody, then you can decide whether you want to use it or not. You have to take a bite and try it. Katonah Yoga is a Hatha Practice with a heavy influence of Taoist Philosophy. The tenets of Taoism that are defining characteristics of the Katonah Practice are as follows:
1. All polarities are mediated by trinity, ie ying, yang and you. You are the third element mediating all polarity.
2. The universe has pattern. In pattern there is intelligence – you can learn about yourself via your patterns.
3. In the repetition of pattern, there is potential for insight. (Do I want to be this way, or not? Wow, this is why my shoulder hurts, etc.)
One of the many goals of the Katonah Yoga practice is to move the unconscious into the conscious, then eventually using what we know to our advantage.
First Nature: Ones’ unconscious habitual patterns. Ex: Illiterate, with the potential to read.
Second Nature: A conscious construction of a more fully functioning self. Ex: Formally trained to read.
Third Nature: Integration of the unconscious and the conscious. Ex: Chosing what you want to read.
We use measures (cross-reference, fitting ourselves, right angles, compass) and maps (magic square) as guideposts to accomplish these goals.
Why do we love Katonah?
Katonah Yoga is not just a yoga practice; it’s a framework for understanding and organizing yourself within your environment. Katonah Yoga focuses on many themes, including the metaphor of the body as a house, physical practice tools, and the functional use of poses. Here’s a little more about each:
The Body: We identify the body as the home. We make a mess: enjoy life, imbibe, have a couple of late nights with friends, and drink the elixir of the universe! Then, we clean it up: do our practice, eat well, get rest. We don’t treat our house like a museum, where everything needs to be so preciously cared for…but we also don’t treat it like a frat house!
The Practice: The alignment of the hatha based postures are not linear, they are about positioning yourself in time and space to effectively get around ones’ personal narrative. By gaining this perspective, it becomes easier to decide what does and doesn’t serve us, and how to change these beliefs.
Functional Use of Poses: Each pose in Katonah Yoga is an archetype for exploration and insight. This practice teaches that repeated experience in these archetypes allow us to bring the unconscious to the conscious, allowing us to learn what mental patterns are holding us back.
Why Practice Katonah Yoga?
Personal Growth and Insight: Katonah Yoga offers more than just physical postures; it provides tools for personal reflection and development. Through the postures, breathwork, magic square meditation and theory, you learn to view your life from various perspectives, enabling a deeper understanding of your personal narrative and the opportunity to manipulate it to your advantage.
Therapeutic Benefits: The precise nature of the poses and the emphasis on alignment yield therapeutic benefits and build the infrastructure to avoid injury and enhance physical performance from walks on the beach to high-intensity athletics.
